With burnout rates continuing to grow each year, the holiday season has become a time where living rooms get turned into make-shift offices rather than cozy family rooms. Lit up laptop screens, email chimes, and vibrating phones cause more attention than any twinkling holiday decor you have in your home. Precious family time gets disregarded because we aren't rightfully disconnecting from work and making them a priority. Disconnecting during the holidays has been scientifically proven as imperative for our health, so let's make a change this year. Let's be present with our families and give ourselves the time we have to regroup. Leave here with the motivation you need to change your mindset this holiday season.

In a world full of high speed internet, instant accessibility, and cells phones glued to our hands, making ourselves available 24/7 has become a bad habit. Believe me, I totally get it. But, why do we do it? Whether we're trying to impress our boss, want a promotion, or just feel pressured to stay on around the clock, we're actually doing more harm than good.

What ends up happening is a lack of productivity and retention. A Whitehall study examined that working long hours can even double the odds of a major depressive episode.

The idea that working fewer hours increases productivity is a trending topic in today's society. Take Microsoft for example, they had a 40% increase in productivity when eliminating one full day in their work week. The idea was centered around making sure "work-life-balance" was being practiced. The company recognized burnout within their employees who are working longer hours, logging on during weekends, and responding to emails at ungodly hours of the night.

But, let the facts speak for themselves. NetCredit came up with this amazing infographic listing 14 scientific reasons why we should be disconnecting from work. Check it out:

Whether it's a weekend, a holiday, or a vacation, taking time to regroup from work will give you amplified productivity, more motivation, and increased energy levels when you do show back up to the office.
